About heritage conservation,
What criteria do we have? Functional? Do we want to maximise the use of land? Do we want no waste of heritage?


You will find me crazy if I ask the public to support conservation of my 'apartment', although it may be unique in style and possibly reflect hong kong people's lives.

We could not support everything. We have to be realistic. Being realistic does not mean that I fervently support development because I am also quite fed up with the ideas of development. We are so tempted to develop every single inch of space without understanding that space is sometimes vital for more creativity.

For keeping heritage, How do we know what we truly share and treasure?We have to choose.
To choose is to make judgement. By making more judgements, we then know what we want and then make sound judgement.

However, we do not know how to choose because we know so little. We are in the kindergarten phase. We have to be educated. Sb has to draw up an education plan. We have to learn from others and from history too.

I watched Pearl report last night about conservation, my feeling is that we tackle problems one by one. Govt is worried about all logistics matters eg. accessibility, management of the site etc. How come there is no one to link up all heritage sites and make it into an attractive tour option to the public? If the Hollywood quarter opn day is on the same week of central police station exhibtion, the voice/noise will be more. No co-ordination is what I can see in the present situation.

So can there be a (bi) yearly review of 'heritage' policy, not piecemeal, short term but long term building up of heritage? Drawing up and consolidating a list...Public poll/competitions ? ...Co-ordinating diff parties by a central office...be it NGO or govt department who has long term committment to work on HK heritage.

Public may not know how to use the space, we need expertise. Like the earlier exhibition in central police station and victoria prison, it had widened public's horizon on how the places can be used. But ordinary people can tell you what they want and what they truly miss.

Heritage is not just preserving the old but creating new meanings of the old. Eventually people find revitalising energy from history and have capacity to create better future.

遊戲交流

星加坡朋友到香港,在鏞記吃燒鵝,席間談到星加坡兒童有個遊戲叫Duck,Duck,Goose.於是互相交流兩地經典遊戲玩法.忽發奇想,如果有個兒童營,以各地遊戲作文化交流,我想一定非常有趣.

Cattle depotin

Fung Ping and I wanted to visit Cattle Depotin (an area for local artists) long time ago.
We decided to go there during Easter holiday as they had local band performance, eg. Oliver.
Somehow people who got ticket had to go into the empty space (see photo) which made you feel trapped.
We decided to stand in the outer area to watch the performance instead.

Who would want to be trapped in a place called 'Cattle depotin'?

Not knowing how long this place could survive.
Rumour has that those buildings will soon be re-developed.

Big Day for my niece

My niece had her children 'baptism' this Easter. It is not so much a baptism but an occasion for parents making vows to raise their kids in God's way.
She was very happy and seemed to understand what it's going on.
Evidence 1. She looked at her photo (with parents) on the programme intensely and smiled with contentment.
Evidence 2. She held tightly the gift (bible) that the church gave her.
Evidence 3. She performed well throughout the ceremony. No crying. all time smiling, very ususal indeed
Evidence 4. She made an ET phone home gesture (i.e. pointed her finger to the direction of 'heaven' when she was on 'stage'/front of the altar.) Everyone was amazed.

Thank God she loves church. And more precisely God loves her.

Perspective magazine

Sitting in Kosmo, I read 'perspective'. I found 2 articles that are so good. I nearly buy that magazine.

One is about a children's museum in sweden. Sweden is a place that has put children as centre of concern. I once wrote an article about sweden's children policy after my visit to Stockholm.

The children' Art Museum Vasteras is a contemporary art museum for children. The art works are placed in their eye levels. The entrance is designed for kids and not for adults. But it is not fancy land. It is very much like a mini size of real museum.

Another article that interests me is about information design. How do people cope with increasing information signs in daily life?
Paul Mijsenaar has been interviewed to comment on sign and urban arhictecture.

Signs as language/semiotics are forever my concern. That was what I studied in the University.

Importance of Sleep

In last week's 60 minutes+ episode, a UC berkerley researcher said that sleep deprivation is equal to food deprivation. According to him, from an evolution pt of view, why we have to sleep if we will become so vulnerable when we are asleep.
That implies the importance of sleep.

Other researchers show how lack of quantity and quality sleep will affect our memory, reflexes, emotions and even sex life.
Through a CT scan image, the area in brain that controls emotion is literally 'on fire' if not enough sleep and it ceases to communicate with the brain that controls your logic. Our emotions skip being the counter-checked by my our logical reasoning. We are more likely to do stupid things. Or even lead to psychiatric problems. (this I believe. I had an experience in a psy ward common room, yet don't worry, I was not the patient but a visitor). I overheard people sharing what kicked off their maniac episodes. All of them pointed to the lack of sleep for a period of time. I later dicsussed possible correlation of manic depression and sleep with my friends. So this 60 minutes program gave me more insight on what I previously observed.

Also, people who have been deprived of sleep overestimated their abilities just like drunkers.

Experts' advice: sleep through the night, sleep at least 7.5 to 8 hrs. Doing more does not mean that you are doing them smarter or efficiently.

Film Festival: fine, toally fine

Audiences like this Japnese film, cinema/theatre was full of laughters. People even gave applause when the film ended.
An old second hand book shop is the starting point of the film.
Focusing on a group of young people (from their 20's turning to 30's).
Questions: how to find passion in life, sth a person will die for!
Everyone in life needs restoration. Everyone has its own way to manifest restoration.
Repeatedly doing sth that you do not have passion in will only make us losers in life.

In the film, a pretty but clumsy girl has 3 (secret admirers).
The first one gave her food
The second one gave her job
The third one bought the painting that she drew

The first one bought her a box of colour pencils as birthday gift
The second one bought her a big box of birthday gift and a bunch of flowers
The third one prepared for her home made fish paste (the girl's favourite food) and BBQ with her.

The first one wants to prove that he is likable
The second one wants to find passion through love
The third one restores her soul.

Sometimes, love seems so complicable, yet it is very simple.
The Girl is very sure of her choice.

Farfalle

做得辛苦,放工要'食好D',由於唔知幾點放到工,所以冇約人一齊去.
Farfalle有種北歐簡約美感,牆上係女主廚畫的橙黃色蝴蝶圖案,坐椅唔係最舒服,但花紋檯布賞心悅目.麵包條超好味,脆到停唔到口,我食左5條以上.Menu中比較特別係紅/白酒(x2)加芝士小食,取價百多元,侍應竟然向我一人介紹,如果要我一人自飲兩杯,未免太神傷,我唯有拒絕.
前菜同甜品,賣相極吸引.係餐廳工作ge人睇黎好愉快,食客食得舒服自在.

書店老板之死-The unbearable heaviness of books

12 Mar出席講座，出席者每人獲贈一本青文出版有關建築的書．青文書室曾在灣仔二樓大廈經營,毗鄰是賣英文書的曙光，雙劍合壁，成為文人雅士勝地．時光流轉，馬老板的曙光書店引退，青文沒有得到當今青年人的支持，那一層又一層的書本最後擠在貨倉，書店老板也死在貨倉內, 葬身書海. 被書壓死 . 一個與書結緣的人傳奇的結局.

Allow outdoor chinese restaurant dining experience (some people may smoke outdoor, but outside area is quite spacious anyway. Besides, the food is less expensive than next door Spasso)
The quality of the food is similar to the one in Festival Walk, afterall under m.a.x concept
If I have to hold a chinese banquet for whatever reasons, I will prefer having it in an open space like Hse of Jasmine. Fresh air, seeing cruise ship moving away from the pier...so romantic.

Actually you don't have to dine there in order to enjoy the view, you can always walk up to level 4 and get some fresh air, esp at night.

曲高和寡 HK Arts Festival: The Master Builder

易卜生（Ｉｂｓｅｎ）本來就不易明白，而建築大師這個劇本更被人認為有老人痴呆病態性的文字，天才的內心世界外人很難了解，天才對上帝的情意結並不會容易明白．再者，劇團來自上海，戲劇用普通話演譯，幾重障礙下，觀眾難免覺得太「高」．演出中場有人走了，有人想睡，但演藝學院劇場椅子太直太硬，不好睡．當然有人努力表示欣賞劇中精句．無論如何，藝術不等同娛樂，不一定令人快樂，但會在你心靈留下烙印，這戲好不好，立時不能知道，但日子會作証．

在婦女節看蘋果ＤＶＤ

一個在北京發生的現代故事，奏著仍是女人的悲歌．年青．能生養（Ｆｅｒｔｉｌｉｔｙ）成了女人存在的價值．王梅（金燕玲飾演）大灑金錢做卵巢保養，但沒有生出孩子．蘋果的身體為她帶來不幸，更淪為做「生金旦」的機器．
明顯地，「有後代」等同男人的自尊，成了男人人生賭博的籌碼．好像從來沒有人問女人其實要甚麼？(not in the film 唯一例外是伊甸園那條蛇，而蛇誘女人吃蘋果，可真夠諷刺！)金燕玲與范冰冰握著手同哭的一幕，說明了電影的意圖．適逢三八婦女節，看「蘋果」合時到極．
