Did a simple search using google:
Mainland webpages use食; Taiwan webpages use蝕
Does it mean:
simplified chinese characters have replaced some traditioanl chinese characters.
Then...apart from Chinglish, HK will have a new form of chinese sentences mixing traditional chinese and simplified chinese in one sentence.

er, we think alike?! this issue lurks in my mind for days, then just yesterday i was asking m friend who teaches Chinese about this sudden appearance of 日「食」 -
