If we do not know how to read sherlock Holmes
The new movie Sherlock Holmes is, in a nutshell,
Postmodernizing the modern Sherlock Holmes by calling upon traces of signifiers; deconstructing the myth by using science and technology.
The movie is quite visual and exotic. It is a movie that combines many elements. It will remind you some of the films you watched before. It re-defines a new Sherlock Holmes: emotionally dependent, strategic rather than logical, more masculine but at the same time more feminine, what I would say...a bit like Dustin Hoffman type. Watson is now the partner of Sherlock on equal footing.
That is not the part that bothers me. I was shocked when the young audiences next to me complaining that they did not understand the story. Can our young people still read 'signs'? Detective stories are not hard to read. It is almost a guided reading. You are led by the clues that the detectives reveal. But if we cannot even follow, there must be sth wrong. NO clues? What's left if we lose our ability to reason and to imagine?

It's not what I expected. I don't like this movie as I can't match it with my perception of Sherlock Holmes constructed from the books & TV series in my early age. I still like the old stuff, indeed.
